Kris on the pace in Monte Carlo

Kris has set his first fastest time on the Rallye Monte Carlo as he recovered from yesterday’s disappointment to fight his way back into the top 10.

The DS 3 WRC driver started today’s schedule in 21st place – but while there were just four stages lined up ahead of the crews, they included a couple of monster tests totalling almost 56 miles. The scope for recovery was blunted by the cancellation of this morning’s first stage on safety grounds, but when the action did eventually start, Kris showed excellent form by posting second fastest time on the longest stage of the rally, SS10

He then backed that up with fourth fastest on SS11, just 5.6sec slower than pace-setter Sebastien Loeb, and then overcame a mid-stage spin to go fastest of all on the day’s closing stage. Kris’s performance today has even eclipsed that of nine-times World Champion Loeb, who was also recovering from Friday disappointment. Kris was two minutes adrift of the Frenchman at the start of the leg, but had hacked that deficit down to a minute by this evening.

Kris said, ‘I was surprised at the fastest time, to be honest. We tried the crossover combination of two studded tyres and two super-soft slicks, and it looks like it worked. Seb [Loeb] went for slicks and he was much slower than us. But even so, I had a spin in there and lost 10 or 12 seconds, so I could have been even faster.’

Kris will start tomorrow’s final leg of Rallye Monte Carlo in 10th place. Sunday’s schedule includes just three stages but amongst them is the iconic run over the Col de Turini. There’s also the Powerstage, which offers the prospect of additional points in the driver’s championship.
