Kris grabs early Monte lead

Kris has made a sensational start to the 2016 FIA World Rally Championship by grabbing the initial lead on the opening round, Rallye Monte Carlo.

Kris started this event without any serious pressure; he and the PH Sport-run Abu Dhabi team will contest up to half of this year’s calendar, but are not mounting a full championship challenge as Kris focuses on developing Citroen’s new car for 2017.

However, conditions were pretty kind by Monte Carlo standards, with stretches of cold but dry asphalt mixed with icy patches. And Kris’s lack of pressure showed as he was able to express himself fully in the DS 3 WRC. He was second fastest on the opening test of the event, despite spinning at a hairpin, and then set a scorching pace in the evening’s second stage to grab the overall lead of the rally. Kris will begin tomorrow’s first full day of action with a lead of 6.9s over reigning world champion Sebastien Ogier.

Tomorrow’s schedule comprises a loop of three stages run in the morning and then repeated in the afternoon. With each bunch of tests comprising almost 60km of competition, it’ll be doubly important to second-guess the road conditions and get tyre choice correct.
